This research aimed to investigate social representations about drugs for adolescents with and without previous consumption experience. The study was conducted with 262 high school teenagers from the metropolitan region of Florianópolis in the state of Santa Catarina. Data were collected by using a questionnaire with open and closed questions with self-administered application. The analysis of quantitative data was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, and Descending Hierarchical Classification for textual data. It was observed that for adolescents with experience of use, the social representations of drugs are associated with a notion of control of use, seeking to avoid addiction and aiming to escape problems. Adolescents without experience of use represent drugs based on the negative consequences of use at the individual, family and society levels. In addition, it was possible to verify that for the majority of participating adolescents, alcohol is not recognized as a drug. It is considered that for the development of changes in the current reality that involves the context of drug use in adolescence, interventional actions must be adapted to the particularities of social thinking produced by adolescents, in addition to the articulation of approaches that insert this theme in a transversal way in contexts of individual and social learning and development.
