Atualmente a mamografia é o principal exame de imagem para rastreamento e diagnóstico do câncer de mama. Contudo, existem algumas limitações neste método. A ressonância magnética das mamas vem se consolidando como um importante método diagnóstico das doenças mamárias, pois é capaz de detectar algumas lesões inicialmente não vistas à mamografia, além de auxiliar na identificação destes achados como benignos ou malignos. Através de revisão bibliográfica, o presente artigo projeta um comparativo entre a viabilidade da ressonância magnética das mamas em face da mamografia no estudo das mamas. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma pesquisa para apontar as vantagens e percalços da mamografia e da ressonância magnética das mamas como métodos de rastreio e diagnóstico do cancro de mama. Concluiu se que ambos os métodos apresentam limitações específicas, sendo imprescindível intensificar os estudos para desenvolver novas tecnologias que sejam menos invasivas, desconfortantes e acima de tudo mais eficazes.
